OBSERVATIONS:

MUTUAL FUND PERFORMANCE

Disappointing performance across the board for Mutual funds in the first quarter with most funds giving out negative returns.  Most affected are EQUITY-BASED and BALANCED Funds as investor sentiment in the first quarter were highly dampened by the crises in Japan and MENA (Midlle East and North Africa).  A lot of Stock markets worldwide also corrected after performing really well in 2010.

PRICE VOLATILITY

The reason why I included the returns of the mutual funds after only a week was to show the volatility of each type of fund.  The 2nd quarter looks very promising for stock markets with our very own PSEi gaining around 7% in just a week.  This brought most EQUITY-BASED funds to regain some of their losses and return to positive territory.  The same results were reflected in BALANCED Funds because part of these funds are also invested in the stock market.  However, the percentage gains are not as big as that of Equity-based funds.  FIXED INCOME funds and MONEY MARKET funds have remained fairly stable showing no significant correlation with the improvement of the stock market index.  This is because these funds don't invest in the stock market.

In a span of one week, the Net Asset Value per share (NAVPS) of Equity-based and Balanced funds moved significantly, making their prices very volatile.  This makes them risky in nature.  On the other hand, Fixed Income funds and Money Market funds have not changed relatively in a week.  This makes them less risky in nature.

FIXED INCOME FUND NAVPS

You might be wondering how BOND Funds or FIXED INCOME Funds can give negative returns considering that these funds are primarily invested in fixed-income instruments like corporate bonds, special deposit accounts, and treasury bills.  I believe the negative returns can mainly be brought about by multitude of investors redeeming their contributions at the same time.  This can happen when investor sentiment is low and investors start moving their funds to less risky investments like bank deposits.  What happens is, fund managers will have to sell these notes and bonds on a discount just so they can fund the redemptions of investors.  This can cause the fund to lose some money.

Another possible reason is the high management fees of these funds.  The fees are computed as percentages of the fund's total capitalization and not just a percentage of the gains.

And since these investment instruments are traded as well, prices also fluctuate depending on the current interest rates, investment ratings, credit ratings, and the corporate standing of the company in the case of corporate bonds.
